Eligibility And Prerequisites
Prospective students of various educational backgrounds may be eligible for the program. To be considered for admission, prospective students should follow the pathway outlined below:
University Affiliate Pathway (3+1)
This pathway is for students enrolled in the degree granting program at the following university:
You will complete three years of undergraduate and prerequisite coursework at your home institution. Then, you will complete 12 months of clinical training and instruction at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. After you complete degree and program-specific requirements, your university will confer a bachelor’s degree and Northwestern Memorial Hospital will award you a certificate of completion.
3+1 students must:
- Apply to the histotechnology program
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better for undergraduate courses
- Pass all prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or better
- Have a prerequisite GPA of 2.5 or higher
Northwestern Memorial HealthCare cannot admit non-affiliated international students at this time and does not offer sponsor student visas.
Prerequisite Courses
To be eligible for the Histotechnology Program, you must complete the following nine prerequisite courses at an accredited college or university with a grade of "C" or better. You must also have a prerequisite GPA for science courses of 2.5 or higher.
- General Biology
- General Chemistry I and II with lab
- Organic Chemistry I
- Microbiology
- Immunology
- College Algebra
- Anatomy & Physiology I and II
Please note:
- You do not need to have completed prerequisite courses within any certain time period.
- You do not need to complete prerequisite courses to apply to the Histotechnology Program. If you are taking spring semester courses, the program must have a midterm grade by March 5. You must complete all prerequisite requirements by June 1. Until you complete all prerequisite requirements, your acceptance is considered conditional.
- Remedial coursework will not be accepted for prerequisite course credit.
- Transfer credits from other histotechnology programs will not be accepted for prerequisite course credit.
Admission Requirements
You must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for the program:
- Enrolled as a student at one of the program's affiliate universities
- Complete all prerequisite courses
- GPA for prerequisite courses must be 2.5 or better (with no grade lower than a C or 2.0)
Meeting all application requirements does not guarantee that the Histotechnology Program will accept or admit you into the program.
