OncoSET: Future of Precision Medicine for Cancer Treatment
Precision medicine, also called personalized medicine, uses detailed information to customize a patient’s cancer care and treatment plan based on the individual’s unique genetic characteristics and health history. Fueled by advances in research, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University delivers world-class care, translating scientific discoveries into innovative new treatments, and training the next generation of cancer specialists.
The Power to Deliver Personalized Therapies
Designed to provide personalized evaluations and customized treatment plans for cancer patients, the Lurie Cancer Center OncoSET precision medicine program uses genomic sequencing and sophisticated molecular analysis to identify precisely tailored therapies and clinical trials for our patients. This breakthrough program is transforming the way we practice medicine, targeting cancer that is not responsive to standard treatment.
- Sequence: Identifying the exact gene mutation that predisposes individual's various cancers through DNA (genomic)
- Evaluate: Determining the best cancer treatment plan by analyzing the genetic makeup of malignant tumors
- Treat: Analyzing family genetic history to help identify patterns, using pharmacogenomics to select the best drug therapy and dosage based on the patient's genes
By developing individualized cancer treatment options our dynamic team is able to identify precisely tailored therapies and clinical trials for our patients.
Team Approach
Our nationally recognized experts make up the OncoSET Molecular Tumor Board. This essential and unique component brings together world class-physicians and scientists to review each individual’s test results and determine the best cancer treatment and clinical trials.
The OncoSET Molecular Tumor Board includes:
- Medical oncologist
- Surgical oncologist
- Radiation oncologist
- Molecular pathologist
- Radiologist
- Pharmacogenomics specialist (who examine a person’s response to various drugs)
Who should consider precision medicine?
Patients with tumors from any type of cancer that are not responsive to standard forms of treatment are potential candidates for OncoSET.
