Features
- Advanced clinical training: Fellows will receive in-depth training in evidence-based assessment, intervention and management techniques specific to acute and critical care patients. The program will cover a wide range of conditions, including post-surgical care, traumatic injuries, respiratory disorders, neurological conditions and more.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration: Fellows will collaborate across disciplines, working closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, physical therapists and specialists on the interdisciplinary team. This will promote a holistic approach to patient care and enhance communication skills needed for effective teamwork.
- Critical thinking and decision-making skills: The program will emphasize developing strong critical thinking skills in fast-paced and high-stress situations. Fellows will learn to adapt treatment strategies based on patient conditions, making swift and informed decisions to optimize outcomes. This learning will build confidence and competence in managing emergencies and unique care challenges.
- Leadership and advocacy: Fellows will be prepared to assume leadership roles within acute and critical care teams. The program will include modules on advocating for occupational therapy services, contributing to treatment planning and effectively managing complex cases.
- Research and evidence-based practice: Fellows will explore the latest research and advances in acute and critical care occupational therapy. They will learn to incorporate evidence-based practices into their clinical decision making.
- Professional development: The fellowship program offers workshops on communication skills, emotional resilience, leadership training, ethical considerations and cultural competence. These components will empower fellows to provide patient-centered care that respects individual values and backgrounds.
- Supervision and mentoring: Fellows will receive one-on-one supervision and mentoring from experienced occupational therapists who specialize in acute and critical care. This guidance will provide personalized support as fellows refine their skills and knowledge.

Patient Care: Seven Hours Experiential Learning: One Hour Observe a member of the interdisciplinary team, such as nurses, physicians and social workers, and complete written reflection assignments. |
Patient Care: Seven Hours Experiential Learning: One Hour You will complete didactic work independently; this may include taking CEU courses and reading evidence-based articles. |
Mentor Day: Eight Hours You and your mentor will share a patient caseload. You will review didactic work with your mentor, such as mentor presentations or completing a case study together in a simulation lab. |
Patient Care: Six Hours Experiential Learning: Two Hours Observe a member of the interdisciplinary team, such as observing surgery in the OR and observing partners from other facilities |
