Pancreatitis Treatments
To reduce pancreatic inflammation, you must allow the pancreas to rest and heal. Treatment usually entails:
- No eating or drinking for a few days
- Intravenous (IV) fluids
- Pain medication
- Antibiotics to fight any bacterial infection
If pancreatitis becomes chronic, treatment may include:
- Abstaining from alcohol
- Quitting smoking
- Taking enzyme supplements
- Medications for pain
- Eating small meals of lean protein
- Insulin, if you develop diabetes
- In severe cases:
- Surgery to remove the damaged part of the pancreas
- Islet cell transplantation
