Chronic Cough Treatments
Treatment for chronic cough will depend on the underlying medical condition that’s causing it. Once a diagnosis is made, your physician may recommend one or more of these treatments:
- Quitting smoking
- Antihistamines or decongestants for postnasal drip or allergies
- Acid blocking medication for GERD
- Inhalant medications for asthma
- Alternate medications for hypertension or heart failure to replace ace inhibitors
- Surgery for tumors or blockages
- Lifestyle changes, including:
- Drinking more water
- Humidifying your workplace and bedroom
- Raising the head of your bed or using more pillows when sleeping
