Chronic Cough Treatments

Treatment for chronic cough will depend on the underlying medical condition that’s causing it. Once a diagnosis is made, your physician may recommend one or more of these treatments:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Antihistamines or decongestants for postnasal drip or allergies
  • Acid blocking medication for GERD
  • Inhalant medications for asthma
  • Alternate medications for hypertension or heart failure to replace ace inhibitors
  • Surgery for tumors or blockages
  • Lifestyle changes, including:
    • Drinking more water
    • Humidifying your workplace and bedroom
    • Raising the head of your bed or using more pillows when sleeping
