Overview
Peroneal Tendon Subluxation
Peroneal tendons connect the outer muscles of the calf to the foot. Subluxation (or dislocation) of the peroneal tendons is a disorder involving an elongation, a tear or an avulsion (separation) of the superior peroneal retinaculum, which is a fibrous band that stabilizes the peroneal tendons. This injury typically occurs in athletes due to a sudden forceful upward flexing or outward turning of the ankle. Peroneal tendon subluxation often goes unrecognized or is misdiagnosed as a lateral ankle sprain.
