Overview
Ankle Cartilage Damage
Both acute and chronic injuries to the ankle can lead to ankle cartilage damage. Cartilage injuries become more likely as the severity of the ankle injury increases.
The most common ankle injury is an ankle sprain. The articular cartilage in the ankle is damaged by direct impact on the bone due to ankle sprains. Ankle fractures, along with ankle sprains, are also a major cause of cartilage damage. If you have persistent pain after an ankle sprain, injury or fracture, it may be caused by additional damage to the cartilage.
