Dystonia Treatments

Depending on your individual case, your physician may recommend one or more of the following treatment options:

Medication

Medications used to treat dystonia include:

  • Medications that affect dopamine, GABA and acetylcholine neurotransmitters
  • Botulinum toxin – an effective therapy for all forms of focal dystonia

Deep brain stimulation

Deep brain stimulation is now frequently used to treat patients with dystonia who do not respond adequately to medical therapy. Patients can often have dramatic improvements in their symptoms while reducing their medications.

Other treatment options

Additional treatment options include:

  • Stress management
  • Physical therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • The use of a splint on the affected body part
  • Surgery
