Northwestern Medicine physician and woman discussing breast cancer risk and prevention.

You cannot always prevent breast cancer. But it’s important to know your risk, and how to reduce risk. Your primary care physician can help you determine your risk level.

If you are at high risk of breast cancer, our care teams will work with you to help lower your risk through treatment and other methods.

Breast Cancer Risk Factors

  • Age
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Personal history of breast cancer
  • Genetic abnormalities
  • Dense breast tissue
  • Past breast biopsy with a diagnosis of cells that may be abnormal (atypia)

We offer breast cancer risk assessments and counseling through the Northwestern Medicine Breast Risk Assessment and Prevention Program.
