Infections of the Breast
Infections of the Breast
Just like any other part of your body, your breasts can become infected with bacteria. When this happens, your body’s immune system will spring into action, causing an inflammatory response that may cause swelling and pain.
This is why a breast infection is more likely for someone who is breastfeeding. Mastitis is the most common type of breast infection in people who are breastfeeding. Approximately 1% to 3% of people who breastfeed will develop mastitis. Treatment typically includes antibiotics.
Signs of breast infection include:
- Breast tenderness or pain
- Breast inflammation or enlargement
- Fever, fatigue and chills
- Body aches (apart from breast pain)
