Surgical excision is the use of a scalpel (sharp knife) to remove damaged or diseased tissue along with a small amount of healthy skin around it. The incision is then closed with stitches. For the patient’s comfort, a surgical excision is usually performed while the area is numbed with anesthetic.

Surgical excision may be effective for patients with skin cancer, lesions or moles.
