Neuropsychological Assessments for Children
Neuropsychological testing can help diagnose cognitive and behavioral difficulties your child may have. An accurate diagnosis leads to better treatment options that can improve your child’s function in school and social settings, and their relationships with their family, friends and community.
Many children may benefit from a neuropsychological assessment, including children who:
- Have difficulty in school
- Experience attention span issues
- Exhibit inappropriate behavior
- Have experienced a traumatic brain injury
- Have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder
- Have evidence of a developmental delay
- Have poor social skills
The assessment typically includes tests and consultations with people in a child’s life, such as teachers, parents, caregivers and private therapists.
The assessment can be used to evaluate a child’s:
- Intellectual ability
- Academic skills, including reading and mathematics
- Organization, planning, flexibility and inhibition
- Attention span
- Language
- Learning and memory skills
Based on the results, your child’s pediatric neuropsychologist may recommend clinical treatments. These treatments can include speech, occupational or physical therapies.
Pediatric neuropsychology assessments are done at Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital. For more information on our neuropsychology services or testing, please call 630.909.7000 (TTY: 711).
