Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic
At Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, we offer leading-edge prosthetic and orthotic care. The Northwestern Medicine Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital offers custom prosthetic and orthotic devices for adults and children. In partnership with a prosthetic and orthotic production company, certified prosthetists and orthotists work with a Northwestern Medicine Regional Medical Group physiatrist to reach the best possible result for you.
Advanced Prosthetic Care and Technology
The Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic addresses the needs of patients living with a partially or fully missing upper or lower limb. You may benefit from an evaluation at the clinic if you:
- Need an upper- or lower-extremity prosthesis
- Currently use a prosthesis that may need to be upgraded, repaired or replaced
- Would like to learn about the latest prosthetics technology available
After you receive your prosthesis, your care team may recommend physical therapy at Marianjoy. Specially trained therapists will teach you how to use the device correctly and safely. You will also learn how to take care of your residual limb and the device. We recommend scheduling follow-up appointments at the clinic. Follow-up appointments will help make sure that the prosthesis fits correctly.
Orthotics Made for You
In the Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic, patients who need more support are assessed for custom orthotic devices. You may benefit from an orthotic device if you have:
- Spasticity or increased muscle tone
- Foot drop
- Joint pain or deformity
- Poor limb function, flexibility or mobility
- Joint instability
After you receive your orthosis, you can schedule a follow-up evaluation to make sure the device works and fits correctly. You may be referred to outpatient therapy at Marianjoy to learn to use your orthosis. You may also be given home exercises to increase your strength, flexibility and balance.
How the Program Works
A clinical staff member will evaluate you to determine the best plan for treatment and/or therapy. A prescription is not required for an evaluation in the clinic. However, some insurance companies require a physician referral. Please contact your insurance carrier before you schedule an appointment.
The Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic features state-of the art technology, such as orthotic tuning.
