Concussion Treatments
Depending on the type of injury and its severity, treatment for a concussion may include:
- Ice
- Rest
- Topical antibiotic ointment and adhesive bandage
- Observation at home
- Immediate medical attention
- Stitches
- Hospitalization for observation
- Diagnostic tests
- Surgery
Because the injury from a concussion can cause the brain to swell, a surgeon may also use an intracranial pressure device (ICP) to monitor the pressure inside the skull.
A concussion may also cause short- or long-term loss of muscle, speech, vision, hearing or taste function, depending on the area of brain damage. In those cases, physical, occupational or speech therapy may be necessary.
