Northwestern Medicine Division of Hematopathology

The Northwestern Medicine Division of Hematopathology provides comprehensive diagnostic services for a full spectrum of hematologic diseases using ancillary studies and morphologic examination of various sample types, including:

  • Peripheral blood
  • Bone marrow
  • Lymph node or extra-nodal tissue biopsies

Our team is comprised of 15 hematopathologists and molecular pathologists board-certified by the American Board of Pathology (ABP). We have expertise in diagnosis of benign and malignant hematologic diseases, including:

  • Myelodysplastic syndrome
  • Myeloproliferative neoplasm
  • Acute leukemia
  • Lymphoma
  • Multiple myeloma

For diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic targets for patients with hematologic neoplasms, we offer comprehensive ancillary testing, including:

  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Flow cytometric immunophenotyping
  • Cytogenetics/FISH
  • Next generation sequencing (NGS)

We also provide second opinions and expert consultation services for hematopathology cases initiated by pathologists, clinical colleagues or patients.

The members of our team are highly recognized in the field of hematopathology not only for their diagnostic expertise but also for their achievements in research. We have published hundreds of journal articles, including reports of novel diagnostic, prognostic or therapeutic biomarkers for lymphoma and leukemia. Many of us serve on the editorial board of high-impact journals and hold major leadership roles in national and international pathology societies.
