Cytomegalovirus Treatments

Most healthy people with cytomegalovirus require either no medical treatment or just over-the-counter medications to stay comfortable until symptoms disappear.

If you have a weakened immune system or have received an organ transplant, your physician may prescribe antiviral and immunotherapy medications.

Babies born with congenital CMV can be treated with antiviral medications if they have symptoms of an active infection.
