Symptoms of Laryngitis

Symptoms of laryngitis include:

  • Hoarseness or raspy voice
  • Voice loss
  • Pain when talking
  • Sore throat
  • Scratchy or burning sensation low in the throat

More severe laryngitis symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Wheezing
  • Vocal spasms when trying to talk
  • Chronic unproductive cough or throat clearing 

You should see an otolaryngologist if symptoms:

  • Don’t show improvement after two weeks
  • Aren’t associated with a cold or flu
  • Include coughing up blood
  • Cause difficulty swallowing
  • Are accompanied by a fever that won’t subside
  • Are accompanied by a lump in the neck
