VHL Surveillance and Treatment

To ensure that VHL disease–related tumors are caught early, before symptoms develop or when they are more easily treated, specialists at the VHL Program follow the recommended surveillance guidelines established by the VHL Alliance and its Clinical Advisory Council.

At this time, there is no cure for VHL, and there are no medications available to prevent the development of VHL-associated tumors. However, there are treatment strategies to address the various manifestations of VHL. Treatment for most patients with VHL may involve surgery to remove the tumors before they become harmful. Certain tumors can also be treated with focused high-dose irradiation.

Ultimately, proper surveillance and early identification of tumors are the best way to reduce the most serious consequences of VHL and prevent the need for more intensive treatment.
