What Is Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery?

Urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery is a subspecialty focused on genitourinary conditions that frequently affect women.

Urologists specializing in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery typically have completed a five- to six-year residency through the American Board of Urology and are board-certified (or board-eligible) in Urology.

The Northwestern Medicine Urology Program offers comprehensive, compassionate care for women who have urological conditions, including:

• Fistula, an abnormal hole in the wall of the vagina or other organs causing urine leakage
• Incontinence (leakage of urine)
• Prolapsed (fallen) bladder or uterus
• Urethral diverticula
• Dysfunction related to urination
• Injury to the urethra or bladder due to surgery or radiation

Many women are reluctant to talk to their physicians about these issues, but don’t be embarrassed. These conditions are very common and, in many cases, have a simple resolution.
