When the surgeon places the tubes for VV-ECMO, potential complications include bleeding from the placement sites, vessel injury that requires surgical exploration, blood pressure problems and clot formation. Once the patient is on VV-ECMO, potential complications related to its use include major bleeding from any part of the body, clotting complications, mechanical failure from any component of the machine and death.
