Overview
Bunion (Hallux Valgus)
A bunion, or hallux valgus, is a painful bony bump that develops on the inside of the foot at the big toe joint. A bunion develops slowly from pressure on the big toe joint, and then causes the big toe to lean toward the second toe. The bump will continue to grow and eventually make it painful to walk or wear shoes.
Bunions are more common in women. They may be caused by wearing narrow or pointed shoes, or they can be hereditary. Rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory conditions can also cause bunions.
