About Seizure Disorders and Epilepsy
Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disease, affecting as many as 1 in 26 people in their lifetimes. While epilepsy and seizure disorders are closely related, not all seizure-like events are caused by epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a specific seizure disorder in which a person has two or more unprovoked epileptic seizures that occur more than 24 hours apart. These seizures have no apparent trigger.
The specific type of epilepsy syndrome you might have is determined by the following factors:
- Type of seizure experienced
- How old you were when you started having seizures
- Which part of the brain is affected
- Your genetic history
