Our shared leadership committees enable nurses from all settings and roles to actively participate in organizational decision-making, interdisciplinary collaboration and leadership development activities. Our shared leadership structure is designed to foster horizontal and vertical communication, inspire nursing excellence and promote autonomy and accountability among nurses throughout the organization.
Committee members, in collaboration with the committee facilitators, who are Directors of Nursing, develop annual goals based on divisional priorities that are aligned with the strategic goals of both the nursing division and the overall organization.
Following is a list of major committees:
Provides a forum for increasing the visibility, collaboration and contributions of APRNs across Northwestern Medicine by providing advanced practice clinical leadership the opportunity to improve systems and processes critical to the practice of APRNs. Oversees the dissemination and enculturation of new APRN initiatives including the APRN framework for practice, transition into practice and APRN student process; and advancing the leadership of APRNs at the local, regional and national levels. Contributes to innovations in nursing, patient care and the practice environment.
Nursing Professional Practice Committee
Oversees nursing practice to ensure the delivery of safe, high quality, and evidence-based care consistent with Northwestern Memorial's Framework for Nursing Practice and Patient Centered Care Model. Monitors Exceptional Care dashboard metrics to ensure that annual goals for nursing are achieved. Recommends evidence-based practice changes to meet Exceptional Care goals. Oversees the work of the Nursing Peer Review Committee, the Nursing Policy and Procedure Committee and the Nursing Performance and Efficiency Committee. Oversees the annual nursing taskforces developed to advance specific strategic goals. Reviews the hospital's written staffing plan bi-annually to ensure ongoing compliance with Staffing by Patient Acuity Legislation.
Nursing Professional Development Committee Advances opportunities for professional development in areas such as certification, career development, Diploma/ADN to BSN education, mentoring programs, professional organization involvement and volunteerism. Develops programs and initiatives to advance professional recognition for nurses. Develops processes to enhance nursing professionalism at NMH.
Nursing Research & Evidence-Based Practice Committee
Advances nursing research and evidence-based practice projects across Northwestern Memorial Hospital through education, metnoring, and the development of effective processes and support structures. Participates in planning and executing the annual Nursing Research Symposium. Approves credentials of all nursing principal investigator candidates and makes recommendations to Northwestern University's Associate Vice President for Research. Reviews and approves all proposals conducted by nurses or that involve nurses as research subjects.
Nursing Policy and Procedure Sub-Committee
Reviews and revises nursing policies and procedures incorporating evidence-based practices as appropriate. Reviews and implements Lippincott Nursing procedures in all nursing areas. Sends all updated, completed, reviewed policies and procedures to the Nursing Professional Practice Committee for approval.
Nursing Quality Peer Review Sub-Committee
Empowers clinical nurses who exhibit best practices to identify and address gaps in quality care. Identifies opportunities for advancing the quality of nursing care at NMH. Provides professional development for all parties involved in review process.
Nursing Performance and Efficiency Sub-Committee
Improves nursing performance related to quality and financial targets by focusing on specific outcomes in high opportunity areas. Guides the work of the Department Performance and Efficiency Committees.
Nursing Exchange Network Taskforce
Will establish the infrastructure for a nursing exchange network for Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Nursing Care Transition Taskforce
Improves the care of the older adult patient across sites of care at Northwestern Medicine. Recommends technology changes to optimize personalized care of the older adult patient across sites of care.
Interprofessional Relationship Taskforce
Provides a forum for a diverse workforce to advance team work and employee engagement. Provides a forum to improve patient satisfaction by focusing on specific outcomes in high opportunity areas. Guides the work of the department-based Interprofessional Relationship Committees.
Interprofessional Technology and Innovation Taskforce
Provides a forum to advance innovation in technology in patient education to provide outstanding and cutting-edge patient care. Provides a forum to advance innovation in technology related to patient care delivery to provide outstanding and cutting-edge patient care.
Nurses from all settings and roles have the opportunity to apply for a two-year term on a shared leadership committee, sub-committee or taskforce. Terms are staggered so that 50 percent of members rotate off the committees each year.
